Must-see digital ads

One thing I’ve been enjoying these last couple of weeks is meeting so many different kinds of people and learning about what they do in the field of media. Last evening, I went to a presentation that was part of the She Says series of talks, that focussed on digital ads submitted for global competitions. There, I found out about these online ads, some of which are ingenious, some downright funny and entertaining, and some both. I wanted to share them here because I really enjoyed watching all of them. There is certainly no dearth of creativity around, that’s for sure.

1. The Ikea You Need A Quiet Space site showcases Ikea products in different rooms of a building. As the user, you can change which room you are looking at, and see Ikea merchandise in their own settings, so to speak.

2. The Nokia NGage Get Out and Play site. I think this one was the best of the lot I saw. It’s based on everyone’s favourite Nokia game, Snake – look at the site and then see if you get it. I only actually got it on the second viewing, because I didn’t know the context the first time around (I hope I haven't spoilt it for you, though!!). I remember the time when mobiles had just been introduced - most of my friends used to play Snake for hours on their phones. Anyway, it leads to a game that involves the lead character bouncing about in a seated position in mid-air trying to eliminate a wall of people….let me stop there. Play it and see for yourselves!

3. The Fiat interactive ad which has a socially conscious element and is supposed to subtly drill in the message of not drinking and driving.

4. The MSNBC Newsbreaker game which is built on that other popular brick-breaking game, which I had fun with.

5. The Orange Unlimited ad which I think is nice because I like rainbows. Yeah, nothing fascinating. Go figure.

6. The HBO Voyeur site. Totally cool. Go take a look.

7. German agency Jung von Matt’s Tagged in Motion project. This is a 3D representation of a graffiti artist’s work on screen. You won’t get it till you see it.

8. This one most of you would have seen the print version of – Nikon’s Picturetown campaign. Basically, Nikon gave D40 cameras to random residents of Georgetown, South Carolina, USA. Some of the pictures on the site truly look like they’ve been taken by professionals, when they are actually just people like you and me. Cool way of plugging your product with the message that anyone can take fantastic pictures if you use a Nikon D40.
